Task force to boost investments in IT

Mr Dayanidhi Maran, Minister for Communications &IT

Chennai , May 25

The Information Technology Ministry would recommend development of alternative IT corridors near Chennai to ease the pressure on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), according to the Union Minister for Communications and IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran.

Addressing reporters after a review of the information technology park at Siruseri on the OMR, designated at the IT Corridor, he said that land prices along the corridor had increased to unviable levels. Land costs about Rs 3-4 crore an acre and the Government also does not have land to spare for potential investors. His Ministry would recommend to the State Government to develop alternatives to the IT Corridor for information technology companies to set up businesses. This would help to ease the pressure on OMR and give investors a choice, Mr Maran said.

IT Corridor

But development will continue along the IT corridor. The six laning of the 26-km stretch from Madhya Kailash, Adyar, was proceeding slowly. The plan is to expedite work on at least a 10-km stretch in the first phase and take it in stages even up to Mahabalipuram (about 50 km south of Chennai), he said.

IT Task Force

He said the State Government would constitute a task force to provide a boost to investments in information technology. The momentum in information technology development cannot be allowed to slow down. At the Siruseri IT Park, promoted by State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) there is a potential to generate over 3 lakh jobs. But only eight out of the 71 companies to which land has been allotted have started work. The authorities would be look at the reasons for delay.

Hotspot

The Tamil Nadu Government has also expressed intention to develop satellite townships around Chennai and other urban centres. Sriperumbudur, about 35 km to the west of Chennai is a major industrial centre. The State Government has major plans in that area, he said.

Also in the pipeline are plans to develop smaller cities such as Madurai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Tiruchi. There is a proposal to modernise the airports in these centres.
