Hangovers cost Bangalore corporates Rs 47 cr

On an average, a Bangalorean spent around Rs 200 for his drink during the weekends.

A survey has revealed that productivity loss because of hangovers from drinking alcohol costs corporates in Bangalore as much as Rs 47 crore every year.

The HerbalScience Vice-President for Operations and Marketing, Mr Humayun Farid, told newspersons on Wednesday that nearly 68 per cent suffer from hangovers. He said 40 per cent of the respondents in the survey conducted by Maven Market Research & Consulting admitted that hangovers affect their productivity.

Nearly 33 per cent go to work two hours late, 6 per cent take half-a-day off, while 23 per cent take the entire day off.

Mr Farid said nearly 50 per cent of the respondents claimed that they consume alcohol once a week, 25 per cent twice a week and 20 per cent consume alcohol daily. "About 60 per cent of the respondents consume alcohol over the weekend thereby missing quality time with family and friends," he added.

He said nearly 25 per cent of the respondents said they consume beer or whiskey more than any other drink. Those who consumed wine constituted a mere 7 per cent. On an average, a Bangalorean spent around Rs 200 for his drink during the weekends. A sample of 350 persons from a cross section of the workforce was taken for the survey whose average annual income was Rs 3 lakh each.

Increasing numbers

Some of the pub and liquor dealers who were interviewed as part of the survey said that there was a gradual increase in the number of customers daily but during weekends it picks up substantially. The survey also revealed that around 40 per cent of them drank to socialise, while 30 per cent drank to de-stress themselves and the rest to "feel a buzz.'' Nearly 35 per cent of them drank at pubs, 20 per cent of them at their friend's place and 15 per cent at their homes.
