US expert sees drenchers ahead

A well-known US meteorological expert says that prevailing weather indicators suggest persistent rainfall for the next five to seven days between a strong monsoon `low' off southern Arabia and the Kerala (even Karnataka) coast.
"This upper low off Arabia strikes me as unusual, though I do not know what to make of it. It could even spin up a named tropical cyclone," said Mr Jim Andrews, a columnist for the US-based private forecaster AccuWeather.
"Thus, I can say that, yes, there is a well-defined heat low over South Asia; But I cannot say, quantitatively, where we stand versus climatological averages," he said in reply to a communication from Business Line.
"Another thing is that, for me, finding the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the time of the oncoming monsoon is challenging, at best," he added.
But, looking at rainfall distribution this week over South India, he said he would say that the southwest monsoon and its rains have indeed begun. Forecast models suggest persistent rainfall for the next five to seven days.
