Maryland sets up trade office in Bangalore

The US State of Maryland has chosen Bangalore to locate its first India trade office.

The Maryland India Centre (MIC) will formally be opened on May 29. It will facilitate two-way business interactions and incubate Maryland companies looking to start operations in India, a release from the centre said.

Maryland is home to 350 biotechnology companies, apart from aerospace majors such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and ARINC.

The US State has been at the forefront of the new India-US relationship that is shaping up, according to Mr Derek Mohre of Maryland's Department of Economic & Business Development.

"In the past year, we hosted the Global IIT 2005 alumni conference in Maryland, participated in the Biotech 2005 international conference in Mumbai, and brought a delegation of businesses to the Indo-US S&T forum on nanotechnology in New Delhi."

Both the locations have a strong presence of Defence and aerospace businesses; Maryland has invested $450 million to create infrastructure for bioscience R&D, according to Ms Sheila Khatri, ED of the MIC.Telecom, finance, and manufacturing sectors in Maryland have also been making inquiries about Delhi and Mumbai.
