Truck-owners withdraw strike call

The All India Confederation of Goods Vehicle Owners' Association (ACOGOA) has withdrawn the nationwide truckers' strike it had called for from June 1. This follows a meeting the president, vice-president and other office-bearers of the Association recently had with the senior officials of the Ministry of Road Transport. One of the demands of the ACOGOA was the withdrawal of the tax imposed by the Orissa Government on goods vehicles passing through the State.

It is now learnt that the Orissa Government, at the instance of the Centre, will scrap the tax from June 1. Also, truck-owners having up to two vehicles will exempted from TDS. Where the TDS will be deducted, Form 16A will be issued in the name of the truck-owner.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority too will issue directives to all insurance companies not to refuse renewal and issue of Third Party Legal Liability Motor Policy at the existing tariff. Also, highway toll charges will be recovered from consignors and the anti-overloading provision of the Motor Vehicles Act reviewed and strengthened to ensure compliance.
