Vijayawada, May 28

After the success story of Hyderabad in the IT sector, the time has come to focus on the smaller cities such as Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada to boost exports and create job opportunities for the youth, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy, has said.

He was speaking at Kesarapalli village near Gannavaram airport (Vijayawada) on Saturday evening after laying the foundation stone for IT towers/special economic zone.

He said the State had achieved IT exports of Rs 12,500 crore during 2005-06, occupying the fourth position in the country, and recording the highest growth rate of 64.5 per cent against the national average of 36 per cent.

He said the development of Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Kakinada and other towns as IT centres would boost exports.

EXPANSION

Ms K. Ratna Prabha, IT Secretary of the State Government, said on the occasion that there were at present 16 IT companies in Vijayawada with an export turnover of Rs 33 crore and an employment base of 2,500. The IT park at Kesarapalli village would be a self-contained modern township with office space for small and medium IT companies, an incubation centre for entrepreneurs and all other amenities and facilities.

"By 2009, it is projected that IT exports from Vijayawada would cross Rs 100 crore. Exports from Visakhapatnam crossed the Rs 100-crore mark this year and by 2009 we are sure the target of Rs 400 crore would be achieved,'' she said.

The IT park at Kesarapalli would give jobs to 10,000 people, she added.
