`Credit ratings vital for SME sector growth'

Madurai , May 29

The small and medium enterprises (SME) sector has a lot to gain from third-party ratings as the benefits go beyond obtaining bank loans at lower interest rates and enable them achieve more orderly growth, according to Mr D. Thyagarajan, SME Director, CRISIL.

Rated entities benefit from learning with professional analysts, peer group comparison, and better appreciation of their strengths and weaknesses, he said at a seminar on "Basel II norms Credit Rating for SMEs' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Trichy Zone, at Tiruchy.

Rating products

CRISIL has two rating products dedicated to the SME sector — CRISIL SME Ratings for SMES, and NSIC-CRISIL Performance and Credit Rating for SSIs.
