MCCI to address graduates' soft skills issue

Our Bureau

Chennai , May 29

The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry plans a series of initiatives to address the issue of graduates not possessing soft skills and hence being unemployable.

"There is a void in the industry as we have vacancies but only five per cent of fresh graduates are employable," said Mr V. Balaraman, President, Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), here on Monday.

The chamber will seek to address this gap by focussing on conceptual knowledge and social skills with emphasis on communication abilities and teamwork. It will look at Engineering courses and Arts and Sciences programmes, mainly in semi-urban and rural parts of Tamil Nadu, according to him.

2 colleges identified

The MCCI has identified two colleges under Anna University - Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, Thanjavur, and Noorul Islam College of Engineering, Kanyakumari - and will conduct a series of tests from June to December to understand how such skills can be improved.

To address this issue, the chamber along with Anna University, the University of Madras and Timesjobs.com will organise a seminar on June 1 when topics such as industry-academic gap and how best to bridge it will be discussed.
