Kerala Chamber plans fair focused on agri sector

Sankar Radhakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram , May 29

The Chamber of Commerce, Thiruvananthapuram, is planning to organise a trade fair targeted at Kerala's agricultural sector and traditional industries such as coir.

Scheduled to be held in the city in October or November this year, the event is intended to expose the State's agricultural and food processing sectors, and traditional industries such as coir to the latest developments in these fields, said Mr M.R. Narayanan, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Thiruvananthapuram.

The event is likely to be called `Kerala Vision 2010'. According to Mr Narayanan, Kerala's agricultural and food processing sectors, and traditional industries such as coir, have tremendous opportunities for growth, especially export-led growth.

However, the usage of outdated technology and lack of value addition is preventing the advancement of these sectors.

The `Kerala Vision 2010' event will showcase the latest technologies available in areas such as food processing, coir processing, and agriculture.

Exposure to the latest developments in these sectors is expected to help Kerala's entrepreneurs revive the fortunes of the State's agricultural sector and traditional industries, he added. The event is expected to draw exhibitors from several foreign countries including Israel, France, and Belgium.

Besides the Chamber of Commerce, several departments of the State Government are expected to be associated with the event.

The FICCI is also likely to support the event, Mr Narayanan said.

The Chamber of Commerce also plans to organise at least two other events this year. On the cards is an IT fair and the second edition of `Arogya' an exhibition on alternative medicine, which was first held last year.
