Campaign to promote Buddhist sites planned

In an effort to attract more foreign tourists, particularly from South-East Asia, the Ministry of Tourism plans to launch a campaign to promote Buddhist sites, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Ms Ambika Soni, has said.
Addressing the Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry, she said the Ministry had also chalked out an integrated infrastructure development project covering all Buddhist sites. The project proposes to cover sites in UP, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Jammu and Kashmir, at a proposed cost of Rs 5,570 crore, Ms Soni said. Japanese assistance was being sought for the project, she said.
Besides, the Ministry had identified 22 Buddhist sites for development and promotion. The work included strengthening and widening of national and State highways, roadside plantations, conservation of monuments, landscaping, construction of visitor centres, museums, upgradation of meditation centres, power and water supply, and development of tourism villages and wayside amenities.
Bodhgaya
In addition, the Railway Ministry had been requested to develop Bodhgaya station as a model station, and the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways and Shipping had been asked to improve the road link to major Buddhist destinations.
