Mangalore, May 30

The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr H. D. Kumaraswamy, has promised to release Rs 4.64 crore to take up immediate relief works at rain-affected areas in Dakshina Kannada district.

Mr Kumaraswamy, along with the Ministers from coastal Karnataka and senior officials from Bangalore, visited various rain-affected areas in Mangalore and Udupi on Tuesday.

Visiting the areas affected by sea erosion at Ullal in Mangalore taluk, he said the State Government had submitted a Rs 160-crore proposal to the Centre to construct permanent structures to tackle the erosion. He said that the State Government would go ahead with a permanent solution to the problem, irrespective of whether it gets support from the Centre or not. He spent more than an hour in Ullal, and visited various houses affected by sea erosion.

During his visit to the New Mangalore Port, Mr Kumaraswamy was told that the port authorities had allowed entry of fishing boats to the port on humanitarian grounds. Nearly 200 fishing boats, which were stranded in the sea, entered New Mangalore Port in the past two days.

Later, speaking to presspersons, the Chief Minister said that the Government would convene a meeting of the Coast Guard and the fishermen's representatives within two weeks.

Asked about the progress in the Mangalore SEZ project, he said that the Prime Minister would lay the foundation stone for the project soon.

Earlier speaking at a review convened by the Chief Minister, the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, Dr H.V. Parswanath, said that Mangalore taluk received a rainfall of 522 mm till May 29. Following are the rainfall figures in other Taluks in the district: Bantwal (553.2 mm), Belthangady (351.4 mm), Puttur (392.2 mm), and Sullia (501.4 mm).
