Supply Chain Management States - Andhra Pradesh AP postal circle earns Rs 74 cr in '05-06 Our Bureau
Hyderabad , May 30 The Andhra Pradesh Circle of the Department of Posts (DoP) earned Rs 74 crore in 2005-06 by providing the complete range of mailing services to corporate houses through its Business Post. During the year, 27 business packages were implemented. These included sale of tickets for the Nizam Jewellery Exhibition, collection of tuition fees, Common Entrance Test (CET), etc.
Action plan
As part of the Action Plan for 2006-07, the DoP has decided to extend timings for booking through Speed Post services at post offices in business areas. The objective is to facilitate booking of articles till late evening. In 12 select centres, 24x7 service is being made available, the AP Circle said in a release. India Post, which is a leading agent for Western Union's Money Transfer Service, carried out one lakh transactions in the circle during the last fiscal. A total of Rs 200 crore was disbursed through the service. To improve efficiency, the circle has also taken up computerisation and technology induction. Out of the 101 Head Post Offices, 66 have been fully computerised. In 2005-06, 272 sub offices were also computerised and 373 post offices provided with multipurpose counter machines.
Insurance biz
Under the foray into insurance sector, the circle insured 17,000 policyholders under the Lift Insurance Scheme of Oriental Insurance Company, which was launched on January 21, 2006. Similarly, the traditional Rural Post Life Insurance - introduced in 1995 - has 10.32 lakh policy holders in the State with a total sum assured of Rs 5,531.65 crore.
