Biotech meet in Bangalore from June 7

The State-sponsored sixth biotechnology event, Bangalore Bio 2006, will have a significant German presence, according to an official release.

Participants at the three-day conference and trade fair beginning on June 7 are biotech databases and tools company Biobase; Senova, BASF Plant Science, Roche Diagnostics, Bio Nord, among others.

These companies have a larger agenda and will look closely for Indian partnerships in various biotech-related areas, the release said.

Biobase is a leading content provider of biological databases, knowledge tools and software for the life science industry. The company is seeking cooperation in bio-informatics, services and products from companies involved in pharma, biotechnology with R&D operations.

TIE-UPS PLANNED

Senova is looking at tie-ups in the development of ultrasensitive immunological and RNA-based quick tests. Among the other participants are Invest in Germany, University of Hannover, Department Plant Molecular Biology, Deininger Unternehmensberatung, the Federation of German Research Institutions and the Research Centre for Infectious Diseases.

BASF Plant Science is on the look out for co-operation in in- and out-licensing of trait technologies, development of traits identified by university or partners.

"India is today much more visible in the German media and general consciousness... The presence of a strong and qualitative German biotech delegation underscores this new image. We are very sure that interesting and valuable co-operations will emerge from the interaction," said Ms Anandi Iyer, Adviser, Intec.net.

150 exhibitors

The sixth annual event expects a participation of over 150 exhibitors, 500 delegates, participation from 20 countries and 25,000 trade visitors.

There has been a sizeable presence of German industry and ministers in the last two Bangalore Bio events. A large Indian delegation of 130 Indians was present at BioEurope Germany in November 2005.

An Indo-German biotechnology bridge was built in a triangular partnership of the Karnataka Biotechnology Development Council, Intec.net and the Frankfurt Innovation Centre for Biotechnology. Intec.net is a technology transfer support agency for SMEs, according to the release.
