JUTE GEOTEXTILE is being used for laying the 4.8-km long Natuk-Dungal Road in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal on Wednesday. This is the country's first pilot project for laying rural roads using jute geotextile under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and is being implemented by the Jute Manufactures Development Council in association with the Central Road Research Institute and the West Bengal Rural Development Authority. Along with that in West Bengal, a total of 10 roads of 47.84 km, spread over four other States — Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa— will be laid under the project estimated to cost Rs 17.83 crore. The flood- prone area of the district has been chosen to test the durability of the environment-friendly jute geotextiles.
