Telecommunications DoT sets 5-month deadline to check mobile users' details Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 2 In a bid to tackle misuse of cellular phones by anti-social elements, the Department of Telecom has asked cellular operators to verify the details of all the existing mobile subscribers. The DoT has set a five-month deadline for conducting the verification process. The move is part of Government's efforts to tighten the subscriber verification process, which according to security agencies was not being carried out by the operators as per specified norms. To address the concerns of the security agencies, private operators have already roped in the Department of Post to carry out the verification through the postal network. Industry associations COAI and AUSPI have also come together to set up the Apex Advisory Council for Telecom in India (ACT) to oversee and ensure that the proper subscriber verification process is followed before any mobile connection is activated. The process laid down by ACT requires the operators to follow a proper identification and address verification process for activation of mobile connections. "Mr T.V. Ramachandran, Director-General, COAI, and Mr S.C. Khanna, Secretary General, AUSPI, are personally overseeing and monitoring this industry initiative in order to ensure compliance with the processes laid down by ACT. Periodic audit checks are also being conducted to assess the compliance efforts of the industry. They expressed their confidence in the commitment of the industry to ensure that a proper identification and verification process would be followed," said a press release from ACT.
