Mumbai , June 3

BV Biologicals, a group company of Venkateshwara Hatcheries specialising in livestock management and healthcare, is close to signing deals with international companies to offer its manufacturing facilities for vaccines for animals.

FIRMS KEEN

"We are close to commencing commercial production of foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccine facility in Maharashtra. Some international companies are keen to use our facilities as a manufacturing base,'' Mr O.P. Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Venkateshwara Group, said.

According to him, the company's cost of production is very competitive prompting these overseas companies to set up manufacturing base here.

VACCINES REVENUE

The company expects to earn revenues of Rs 60 crore during this fiscal entirely from its foot and mouth disease vaccines. The company is also looking at exports especially for Asian countries and South Africa. "FMD vaccine is a very region specific vaccine,'' Mr Singh said.

This plant at Hinjewadi near Pune has been set up at a cost of Rs 40 crore as per USFDA norms. But USFDA approval is awaited.

BIOTECH PRODUCTS

The company plans to manufacture and market biotech products engineered to suit the large-animal health sector, mainly cattle, sheep and goat. The product range would include vaccines, neutraceuticals, hormones and disinfectants.

FOCUS AREA

FMD vaccine will be the company's focus area. FMD is a highly communicable viral disease that affects cattle, sheep, goats, deer, and other cloven-hooved ruminants.

The company has set up a diagnostic and research segment at cost of Rs 12 crore and an R&D and quality centre at Rs 8 crore.

During the year, the company plans to launch four bacterial vaccines for animals.

BV Biologicals had earlier entered into a joint venture with DeLaval Private Ltd for marketing mastitis prevention products.

QUALITY MANTRA

"Our focus will be quality. We have set up surveillance and technical centres across the country to disseminate information on quality of rearing,'' Mr Singh said.

BV Biologicals is also partnering with Bhartiya Agro Industries Foundation for implementing an Animal Healthcare Model. "The joint venture will bring quality livestock management systems and effective disease control programmes to farmers,'' Mr Singh said.
