Karnataka urged to own dredger

Our Bureau

Mangalore , June 4

The Karnataka Government has been urged to own a dredger to tackle the problem of dredging along the coast.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr M. Veerappa Moily, former Karnataka Chief Minister and Chairman of the National Administrative Reforms Commission, said that some of the areas along the coast are in need of dredging. The Union Government will extend its assistance to the State for buying a dredger, if needed. Mr Moily said that he would speak to the Chief Minister in this regard.

Mr Moily, who visited the areas affected by the sea erosion at Ullal in Mangalore taluk, said that 70 houses have been affected by sea erosion at Ullal.

Stating that construction of sea walls may not help much in preventing sea erosion, he said the Government should look at constructing breakwaters. He had discussed this matter with the experts in National Institute of Technology - Karnataka.
