TN postal circle plans warehouse near Chennai

Our Bureau

To introduce delivery of cash at doorstep

MS VATSALA RAGHU

Chennai , June 5

The Department of Posts, Tamil Nadu Circle, plans to construct a new warehouse in Ekkaduthangal, Chennai, by September for servicing corporate clients. Over one acre of land has been secured for providing a supply chain management system to store parcels and other goods.

The capacity of the warehouse will be decided after studying demand, said Ms Vatsala Raghu, Principal Chief Post Master General, Tamil Nadu Circle. The warehouse will cater to Bangalore, Pondicherry and Chennai (within city) routes. The circle will also introduce two new routes for the logistics post parcel service. The Chennai-Pondicherry-Tindivanam-Cuddalore route will function from June 15 and the Chennai-Coimbatore-Tirupur route from July 1.

The Tamil Nadu postal circle will introduce the "delivery of cash at doorstep" scheme from June 9 across 92 head post offices and some sub-post offices. Under the scheme, those holding savings bank (SB) account with post offices can withdraw cash and have it delivered at their homes through postmen.

To avail themselves of this facility, one should register at the post office where one holds an SB account. Post-registration, all requests for withdrawal will be via telephone. The postman will then visit the house with a withdrawal form, get it filled by the customer and take it back to office for processing. Money will then be delivered to the depositor. The entire process will take up to three hours and dedicated phone lines will be provided for this purpose, said Ms Raghu.

A maximum of Rs 5,000 can be withdrawn at one go. Charges of Rs 25 per transaction will be levied for availing of this service in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchi. For other places, it is Rs 20 per transaction.

The circle recently launched a variant of its speed post service called "Speed Post Gold".
