Kerala: Strike calls over fuel price hike

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , June 8

The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) has called for a general strike in Kerala on June 13 to protest against the increase in petrol and diesel prices announced by the Centre.

Meanwhile, the Motor Transport Workers and Engineering Mazdoor Federation, affiliated to BMS, are observing a strike tomorrow (June 9) for the same reason. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already called for a 12-hour hartal on the same day.

GENERAL STRIKE

In a statement, the LDF State Committee said the protest being organised nationwide by the trade unions was being observed as a general strike in the State June 13. The increase in the prices was much more than what could be borne by the State, it said.

The pro-Left Trade Union Sponsoring Committee has also joined the call for the general strike. In a statement, the committee has urged the Centre to roll back the price hike. The Kerala State Private Bus Operators Federation has said that bus operators would strike work on June 13.

The BMS State Secretary, Mr M.K. Kamalan, said that the strike on June 9 was only a beginning of an intensified agitation to force the Centre to withdraw the price hike.
