ESOP model not relevant now: Pai

Bangalore , June 8

In its silver jubilee year, India's best known IT company, may not revisit ESOPs to reward is employees. Infosys is now planning to reward senior employees with retention bonuses.

Mr Mohandas Pai, Director, HR, Research, Education and Administration, Infosys Technologies, told Business Line that the company is considering giving long-term retention bonuses for senior employees, but refused to reveal specific details. He said that several parameters have been considered for this: performance of the employee, level of the employee and number of years spent in the organisation. The company is expected to make an announcement on this soon.

According to him, ESOPs do not have the same impact for a well-established company as they do when the industry is growing. "When you are growing up, you need to attract and retain people, because they are taking a risk by joining the industry." Compensation and attracting talent to the industry is not the issue now. "Our culture and philosophy has been to give ESOPs to everybody. Now it's not possible because we have 53,000 people and it's not a scalable model." Mr Pai felt that the critical thing for companies now was to segment the challenges they faced, "We have to ensure that the leadership is well compensated. Then we have to make sure that the mid-level people find it attractive enough to stay at the company and entry level employees be given something that they aspire for, `like a learning experience," he said.
