Petroleum Industry & Economy - Taxation Are we paying more fuel taxes? D. Murali
Chennai , June 8 Whenever there are price hikes of petroleum products, especially petrol and diesel, one wonders if these fuels aren't cheaper in other countries. On that, there is sufficient evidence to support the view that such puzzlement is justifiable, and isn't merely a delusion of grass being greener on the other side. However, for those who whine that they are paying higher taxes on fuel, the Report of the Committee on Pricing and Taxation of Petroleum Products (February 2006) has an answer: That tax levels as a percentage of the retail price in India for petrol and diesel are similar to the levels prevailing in the developed countries, with the exception of the US. Disquietingly, though, our rates are "substantially higher than the rates prevailing in the neighbouring countries where the rates of taxes on petrol and diesel are more moderate."
