Coffee Marketing - IPR Monsooned Malabar unprotected Our Bureau
Bangalore, June 9 The Coffee Board is contemplating to go in for the registration of Monsooned Malabar, a variety of speciality coffee, under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, Mr Ramesh said. "Monsooned Malabar coffee is like the Darjeeling tea and we want it to be protected," Mr Ramesh said. India has already obtained GI protection for some 24 different category of goods including that of Darjeeling tea, Mysore Sandal, Mysore Silk among others, he said. Monsooned Malabar coffee is unique to India and is processed and prepared exclusively on the West Coast Malabar region by "Monsooning" the coffees. The process of monsooning involves subjecting of the principal coffee grades to a combination of specialised process over a period of time during monsoon months at the coastal curing works comprising spreading, bagging, stacking coffee in wind rows and repeating the sequence of operations several times for achieving the desired. India exports about 3,000 tonnes of Monsooned coffees.
