Higher volume at Coonoor tea sale

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , June 9

A huge volume of 11.67 lakh kg was catalogued for the Coonoor Tea Trade Association auctions held here on Thursday and Friday.

This is the second highest volume so far for the year. Earlier, the highest volume of 12.6 lakh kg was offered for sale on May 25.

The volume of 11.67 lakh kg is 70,000 kg more than last week and 5.84 lakh kg lower than the quantity offered for sale in the corresponding auction of last year. Last year, the leaf grades alone totalled 11.54 lakh kg.

Leaf & dust

Of the total volume offered now, as much as 8.49 lakh kg belong to the leaf grades and the rest belongs to the dust grades.

"With the volumes raising, it is imperative that we get matching demand at higher levels. Otherwise, there would be a decline in the realisation of the producers. Also, the volume should go with quality. Many time, the price trends follow the quality of the invoice," an auctioneer told Business Line.

Last week, quality teas got better prices even there was a decline in the general trend. Among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, Darmona Estate got the highest price of Rs 96.95 a kg. Homedale Estate came second at Rs 86, followed by Professor Rs 73.97, Highfiled Estate Special Rs 73.35, Kannavarai Estate Rs 73.01, Garswood Estate clonal Rs 72.99, Vigneshwar Estate Rs 72.07.
