More boxes of tea

With the tea shipment season due to start shortly, the Container Corporation of India (Concor) has started repositioning the empties at the Amingaon (Guwahati) inland container depot (ICD). A first rake containing 40 empties (teus) has left Kolkata for Amingaon, where there are already 60 empties, spillover from the previous season.

The first rake with loaded tea containers for exports through Kolkata port is expected to roll out of the ICD sometime in the middle of this month. Generally, three rakes of shipments on an average are handled a month, going up to four, even five, in the peak season, i.e. August-September.

Cosco, the Chinese shipping line, is expected to participate in this year's shipments for the first time. Singapore-based Pacific International Line too has shown interest. In 2005-06, the Amingaon ICD's throughput at 2,303 teus posted more than 20 per cent growth over 1,899 teus in 2004-05. Barring unforeseen developments, the trend should persist in the current fiscal also, hope all concerned, i.e. Concor, the shipping lines and the shippers.
