`Rs 1 cr for Mangalore Sky Bus feasibility study'

Govt to seek assistance from Konkan Railway Corpn, says Yediyurappa


The KCCI initiated this move envisaging the growth of the industrial sector in Mangalore.

Mangalore , June 11

The Karnataka Government has promised to release Rs 1 crore for a feasibility study on introducing Sky Bus service in Mangalore.

In an informal chat with presspersons here on Saturday, the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister, Mr B.S. Yediyurappa, said that the Government would seek the assistance of the Konkan Railway Corporation for conducting a feasibility study on introducing Sky Bus service in Mangalore. The city, which is growing at a rapid pace, has seen increase in the number of vehicles. Considering this, the Government has decided to conduct a feasibility study on introducing Sky Bus service in Mangalore.

Stating that a feasibility report will help in taking up this project under private partnership, he said,

"The Government will soon release Rs 1 crore required for conducting the feasibility study of the project."

Asked about the time frame for the completion of the feasibility report, Mr Yediyurappa said the Government would speak to the authorities of Konkan Railway Corporation in this regard.

"If they give the report early, we will take up the project soon," he said.

It may be mentioned here that the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and the Mangalore MLA, Mr Yogish Bhat, had on several occasions stressed the need for introducing Sky Bus service in Mangalore.

Move welcomed

Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, KCCI President, who welcomed the move of the Government to release funds for the feasibility study, told Business Line that the KCCI initiated this move envisaging the growth of the industrial sector in Mangalore. Industrial growth will necessitate modern transport system. Important areas in the city such as airport and the proposed Mangalore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the information technology SEZ should be connected with Sky Bus service, he added.

The KCCI has suggested that around 20 major locations in the city be connected with the Sky Bus service.
