`Make solar panels mandatory'

Our Correspondent

Madurai, June 12

The burden on conventional energy sources can be reduced if installation of solar panels is made mandatory for all flat promoters, hotels and power laundries, according to the Chief Engineer of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), Madurai Region, Mr N. Pattabiraman. Expressing concern over the steep rise in fuel prices, he said, use of bio-diesel could be seen as an effective and worthy alternative to arrest increasing oil prices. He was speaking during the inauguration of a one-day workshop on Energy options for Tamil Nadu in 21st Century, organised by the local chapter of the Institution of Engineers . Stating that the encouragement to captive power generation posed a stiff competition to TNEB, he stressed on the need for finding ways and means to store excess power generated by non-conventional energy sources such as windmills.
