Broadband TRAI consultation paper on 3G services Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 12 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is exploring the option of carving out a separate spectrum band for offering mobile broadband services using WiMax technology. In a consultation paper on third generation services released today, TRAI has suggested that radio frequency for WiMax may be given for an entire circle just like spectrum is allocated to cellular operators. At present, spectrum for data applications is given on a point-to-point basis. "In India, mobile operators are allocated spectrum on the basis of service area. However, data applications have typically been identified as point-to-point or point-to-multi-point links and spectrum utilisation was optimised by only allowing usage along the designated links. The emergence of wireless broadband technologies that can act increasingly like cellular networks may require allocation of spectrum for an entire geographical area," TRAI said in the paper.
Competitive bidding
TRAI has also sought to discuss various options for pricing spectrum for third generation services including the option of competitive bidding. The telecom regulator has also sought views of the stakeholders on issue pertaining to the methodology to be adopted while allocating spectrum for 3G services.
