Lanka wants SSIs to be included in FTA

Our Bureau

Chennai, June 13

Small industries from Sri Lanka want to develop a structure so as to best utilise the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. To begin, they want small-scale industries (SSI) to be accepted under the ambit of the FTA. Sri Lanka is looking for assistance in the form of joint ventures between SSIs in India and Sri Lanka, said Mr Aloy R. Jayawardene, President, Sri Lanka Chamber of Small Industry. A 20-member delegation from Sri Lanka is in Chennai on a five-day tour, mainly to scout for buyers and distributors for its products. "Tamil Nadu holds the brightest prospects for us," said Mr Jayawardene at a meeting organised by the Indo-Asean- Srilanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The country is also looking at co-operation in IT/BPO sector, mainly in the form of training programmes.
