Gujarat employs contractors to complete dam canal

Gandhinagar, June 13
The Gujarat Government has announced that it has engaged 10 `A' class contractors to complete the remaining 101 km of the 458-km-long main canal of the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) to take the Narmada waters to neighbouring Rajasthan.
To expedite work
Declaring its resolve to complete the work at the earliest, the State Government said in a release here that the SSP was an unique inter-State project benefiting Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat and all efforts were being made to complete it expeditiously.
Commitment
In spite of many obstacles, the State Government was working with `total commitment' to the project.
With advance planning, work on the main canal was undertaken much before the height of the SSP dam was raised. This had been done to utilise the water well in time and also make it reach Rajasthan as soon as possible, the release said.
Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) has engaged 10 `A' category contractors to complete the last 101 km of the main canal within the Gujarat border.
The canal had some of the longest siphons over local rivers Banas and Rel. Besides, there were many road and railway crossings involving permission from the Central Government. It also involved additional land acquisition.
