Our Bureau

Kolkata , June 13

The Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Murli Deora, told newspersons here on Tuesday that Indian Oil was committed to investing Rs 3,000 crore in West Bengal. The investment will be made on the expansion of IOC's Haldia Refinery, up to 7.5 million tonnes in the downstream sector. IOC has asked for 210 acres of land.

According to the Union Petroleum Secretary, Mr M.S. Srinivasan, the Fertiliser Ministry has already cleared the proposal to allot unused land currently under control of Hindustan Fertiliser Corporation in Haldia. A parallel proposal has also been placed before the Shipping Ministry for allocation of land.

Mr Srinivasan said that IOC was also looking at exploration of oil and gas, and coal-bed methane opportunities in the State.

Earlier, Mr Deora, reiterating the Union Government's stance on oil pricing, said there was no change in policy.
