New Delhi , June 13

The transporters strike did not affect the movement of daily use items such as fruits and vegetables, milk, water, poultry and meat products here.

Out of purview

This was because the movement of daily use items was outside the purview of strike, said the All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) Advisor, Mr J.M. Saxena. The strike was peaceful since it was voluntary and symbolic, he said.

"Nearly 70-80 per cent of the 27 lakh heavy commercial vehicles and five lakh light commercial vehicles were off the road.

A big proportion of the 1.5 lakh transport companies also remained closed," he maintained.

Response different?

However, IFTRT, a transport research body, maintained that truckers did not respond to the strike as the freight rates have already gone up by 8-10 per cent on trunk routes as against 5-6 per cent increase in operating expense due to Rs 2 per litre diesel hike last week. The AIMTC Managing Committee would take a decision later this month on its future agitation programme, Mr Saxena said . The Government should not charge any tax on fuel, he added..
