Ship diverted to Paradip port

Kolkata, June 14

Tirta Niaga I," a 1975-built cargo ship flying Indonesian flag and carrying 5,900 tonnes of crude palm oil from Singapore for discharge at Budge Budge jetty of Kolkata Dock System, has been diverted to Paradip port, as the vessel is believed to have developed "some technical snags." Paradip Port Trust, inquiries reveal, is still to be informed of the diversion. "Perhaps we will come to know of it tomorrow," a spokesman for the port told Business Line.

The vessel arrived at the Sandheads, the mouth of the Hooghly River, on June 8 on way to the Budge Budge jetty. However, in next few days, it, instead of proceeding towards the Budge Budge, remained stationed at the Sandheads. Sensing trouble, the port authorities alerted the Coast Guard and also sent its own tug "Parasuram." There were reports of some technical snags but no help was asked for. The vessel sailed for Paradip, so the Kolkata port authorities were told.
