Ex-Revenue Dept official to review service tax issues

The Finance Ministry said on Tuesday that it has decided to appoint Mr T.R. Rustagi, a former Revenue Department official, to undertake an "extensive review" of all circulars, instructions and clarifications on matters relating to levy and collection of service tax.
The review would be undertaken keeping in view the changes in service tax law, the court pronouncements and all other relevant considerations, a release issued by the Ministry said.
Views sought
The Finance Ministry has sought the views, comments and suggestions from trade and industry associations, departmental officers and from all others concerned on the circulars, instructions and clarifications that need to be withdrawn or modified.
The views and suggestions could be sent to the one-man committee or to the Finance Ministry latest by July 3.
Moreover, any significant problem or issue relating to service tax that is not covered by any of the existing circulars/instructions/clarifications but deserves to be considered by the Government in the interest of uniformity of practice could also be brought to the attention of the one-man committee.
