The Government of Maharashtra today reduced sales tax on petrol and diesel, effectively bringing down the price of petrol by 80 paise a litre and diesel by 30 paise a litre.
This follows the Central Government's appeal to States to forgo the additional revenues from sales tax that they would get on account of the transport fuel price increase announced early last week.
Taxes on these fuels in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, the most commercialised districts in the State have been brought down from 30 per cent plus Re 1 surcharge on petrol to 28 per cent plus Re 1 surcharge, said the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, after a Cabinet meeting here today.
On diesel the tax has been reduced from 34 per cent to 33 per cent, the surcharge of Re 1 per litre left unchanged.
For the rest of Maharashtra, taxes have been brought down from 29 per cent to 27 per cent on petrol and from 31 per cent to 30 per cent on diesel.
The surcharge of Re 1 per litre of both diesel and petrol remains.
The State earns Rs 5,600 crore annually from taxes on these fuels.
The hike of Rs 4 per litre and Rs 2 per litre on petrol and diesel would have fetched the State an additional Rs 400 crore in revenues.
This is what the State has neutralised through the adjustment of tax on these fuels.
