Poultry farmers urged to curb maize buying

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , June 14

Poultry farmers have been advised to limit their procurement of maize for feed-making to their immediate needs as there is scope for the maize price in the open market to soften soon.

According to a press release from Ms Anuradha Desai, Chairperson,National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), the price of maize in the open market has sharply risen to Rs 650 a quintal and the artificial rise in price could be contained if the farmers opt to procure maize only for their immediate needs. Since the Centre has agreed to release 5.3 lakh tonnes of maize at subsidised rates for the poultry farmers, NECC hopes the release of the quantity would happen soon and hence the need to restrain buying from open market, the release said.

NECC too has impressed upon the Centre on the artificial rise in the maize price in the open market and the need to expedite the release of maize offered at subsidised rates. Once the government releases the stocks, it would tame the maize price in the open market, the release added.
