Cadila eyes Spain, Italy for mergers, acquisitions

Virendra Pandit

To emerge as a $ 1 billion company by 2010

Ahmedabad , June 17

Pharma major Cadila Healthcare Ltd has identified Spain and Italy as the probable nations for its M&A plans to emerge as a $1 billion company by 2010.

Efforts were on to identify companies in the two European countries, Mr Ganesh Nayak, Executive Director (Global Business), told Business Line here on Friday.

Multi-pronged approach

Zydus is adopting a multi-pronged approach that simultaneously looks at strengthening operations on the domestic front, building its presence in the global generics and emerging markets and building a strong base in research and development in line with international health and medical requirements.

The Group has already made headway in its US operations with the launch of five products in 2005-06. It has launched Atenolol, Promethazine, Ribavirin capsules and tablets and Metformin. It has also been filing Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs) at a brisk pace and has 36 ANDA filings and 40 Drug Master Files (DMFs). It has received 15 product approvals so far.

Generics market

The Group's presence in generics market of France is likely to get a boost with a new distribution agreement with the second largest buying group in France - Evolupharm. The move reinforces the existing distribution set up by providing access to an additional 2000 pharmacists.

Mr Nayak said Zydus-France SAS, its French subsidiary, has launched 76 generics presentations so far, of which three had been successful — Simvastatin in the cardiovascular segment, Omeprazole in the gastrointestinal segment and Sertraline in the CNS segment.

It has filed seven dossiers and plans to file 15 more by 2007. It has also filed four site transfers so far, of which three have been approved. More than 30 new products and 28 Site Transfer products are in the pipeline, which would add substantial revenues to the company's operations in France. International operations also received a boost this year with the launch of operations in Brazil and South Africa. The Group's other focus markets are Russia, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Myanmar, Taiwan, the Philippines, Sudan, Uganda and West Asia.
