Pollution Slick handling Our Bureau
A disaster has been averted, thanks to timely action by the Paradip Port Trust. But for the PPT's prompt initiative, a large part of the east coast would have been threatened by (edible) oil slick. Tirta Niaga I, a more than 30-year-old vessel carrying Indonesia flag and 5,900 tonnes of crude palm oil for discharge at the Budge Budge oil jetty (the Kolkata Dock System), changed its course from the Sandheads , the mouth of the Hooghly river, after it developed technical problems and started proceeding towards Paradip port. Earlier, the Kolkata Port Trust had refused it entry into the port apprehending blockage of the channel. By the time, the ship reached Paradip, on Friday afternoon, its condition worsened. There was an imminent danger of oil leaking from it. The PPT swung into action, brought the ship inside the dock, had it berthed in the multipurpose jetty and made arrangements to unload the cargo first. Only after unloading can the ship be propped up, making it possible to undertake repairs.
