Shipping Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Carrying iron ore to Pak Our Bureau
Pakistan Steel Mills hopes to save substantially, an estimated $4 million, by importing iron ore from India. A Dubai-based company is believed to have quoted lowest rates for shipments of iron ore from Goa to Port Qasim. An estimated 1.2 million tonnes is supposed to be sourced from India the bulk of it from Goa at $10.47 per tonne and smaller quantities through the Chennai port at $14.47 per tonne. However, specific rules have been laid down for vessels to be used in the transportation of the ore. Thus, the vessels have to be single-deck self-trimming ore/bulk carriers of less than 20 years of age. They must be suitable for grab discharge. They must not carry flags restricted by the Pakistani Government. The vessels must be classed Lloyd's 100 A1 or equivalent.
