Mangalore , June 18

The urban local bodies (ULBs) under the jurisdiction of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) Ltd owe dues to the tune of Rs 34.55 crore to the company.

Statistics available with Business Line show that the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) owes nearly 44 per cent of these dues. As on April 30, the total dues of the MCC stood at Rs 15.23 crore.

Thirty-one urban local bodies come under the jurisdiction of Mescom. The company covers Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shimoga and Chikmagalur districts.

Electricity connections to water supply systems and streetlights are the main areas where these ULBs have pending dues.

The dues of MCC stood at Rs 11.25 crore in the case of connections to water supply systems, and at Rs 3.98 crore in the case of power connections to streetlights.

The dues of Shimoga City Municipal Council to Mescom stood at Rs 5.07 crore as on April 30. Of this amount, Rs 3.84 crore is pending in power connections to water supply system, and Rs 1.22 crore for power connections to streetlights.

When contacted, sources in Mescom said that they have not resorted to disconnection drive because of the social responsibility, as power connections to water supply systems and streetlights are considered essential. However, the ULBs concerned have been issued notices to pay the pending dues, they said.

Asked about the dues in power connections to other areas, they said the payment is prompt in the cases of connections to commercial complexes owned by the local bodies.
