Assistance hiked for mid-day meal

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) hasincreased the Central assistance to States and Union Territories for meeting cooking cost from existing Re 1 to Rs 1.5 per child per school day under the Centrally-sponsored National Programme on Mid-Day Meal Scheme.

The enhanced assistance would be provided subject to mandatory contribution of minimum 50 paise by States with overall cost norm of Rs 2 and provision of improved nutrition norm.

In case of North-East States, the ratio would be 90:10. Existing level of Central assistance towards cooking cost would be maintained till States contribute their respective shares.

Provision was also made for assistance to States to construct kitchen cum store for which Rs 60,000 per unit would be given. It will benefit about six-lakh primary schools in various States.

Assistance for cooking and kitchen devices of Rs 5,000 per school in a phased manner has also been provided for.
