"The farmers could get first-hand experience during their visit to Ratnagiri and Kolhapur areas of Maharashtra.''

Mangalore , June 19

The Karnataka Horticulture Department is planning to take 40 farmers from each district in the State on a study tour to Maharashtra.

Speaking at a function to inaugurate various programmes under the National Horticulture Mission at Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada district, the Karnataka Horticulture Minister, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, said that the first batch of seven farmers from the State would be sent for field visits to Maharashtra in July.

Lauding the methods taken up by farmers in Maharashtra in growing horticulture crops, he said Karnataka farmers could get first-hand experience during their visit to Ratnagiri and Kolhapur areas of Maharashtra.

He said 15 districts in Karnataka have been identified under the National Horticulture Mission, and an amount of Rs 100 crore is earmarked under the mission. Dakshina Kannada, one of the districts identified under the mission, is likely to get Rs 8 crore under the mission, he said. Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, Chairman of the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), who presided over the function, urged farmers to give importance for mixed cropping pattern. He also expressed concern over the lacunae in the agro marketing system in the State.

Ms Mamatha D.S. Gatti, President of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, was present on the occasion.

The function was jointly organised by the SKDRDP and the Karnataka Horticulture Department.
