Panel on plantations insurance

Chennai, June 19

A two-member working group, comprising Dr Vijay Kelkar, former Finance Secretary and Mr N Rangachary, former Chairman, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority, has been set up to device an insurance programme for the plantations sector. The group is likely to submit a report in three months, the Union Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Jairam Ramesh, said at a press conference here. The move is a part of a larger effort to revive the plantations sector, which involves a major financial package for replantation.

Mr Ramesh said the National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (Nabard) "has agreed to participate" a replantation package for coffee, rubber and tea. The initiative aims at replanting 80,000 hectares of tea, 50,000 hectares of rubber, 90,000 hectares of coffee and 50,000 hectares of pepper. Replantation increases productivity as seen in the case of cardamom. Post-replantation, productivity in cardamom plantations increased from 75 kg per hectare to 230 kg, Mr Ramesh said. - Our Bureau
