Chennai , June 19 The Government has plans to upgrade Chennai airport as a transit hub of international standards at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore, according to Mr Praful Patel, Union Minister for Civil Aviation. This decision would hinge on the proposed meeting with the Tamil Nadu Government and all political parties, where it would be decided whether there would be an expansion of the present airport or a total greenfield airport.
`Amicable solution'
Referring to the issues concerning the expansion of Chennai airport, Mr Patel said that there would be a meeting with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister as well as with all political parties to "amicably resolve the issue". He assured the people living near the airport that the Aviation Ministry would take no hasty decision.
Non-metro airports
The Minister said the Government also planned to develop 35 non-metro airports at a cost of Rs 8,000 crore, the first of which would be Tiruchi, which would cost Rs 200 crore. The other airports in Tamil Nadu that will be taken up for upgradation are Madurai and Coimbatore. The Government planned to start work on these airports in 2006-07. Mr Patel said the Government would look at joint venture partners to develop non-core activities such as hotels, logistics services and retail. Talking about the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines, he said the Government has appointed an advisor.
