The Union Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Jairam Ramesh, said here recently that rubber planters are seeing remunerative prices only this year and they had a terrible time in the last five years.

Responding to the demand of the user industry — mainly tyre manufacturers — to ban rubber exports, Mr Ramesh said he was "instinctively opposed to any physical ban on exports."

On exports, the Minister said in 2005-06, only 8 per cent produced in the country — 73,000 tonnes out of a production of about 7,75,000 tonnes — was exported.

On the other hand, the country imported 45,000 tonnes.
