GM in tie-up with CNG kit supplier

Our Bureau

Mumbai, June 20

General Motors India has tied up with Shamankar a CNG kit supplier based in Ahmedabad to offer a CNG variant of Chevrolet Optra at the dealer level. The extra fitment would cost the fuel-conscious buyer an additional sum of Rs 50,000 over and above the on road price of the variant. The new arrangement will be only available across GM dealerships in CNG-centric such as Delhi, Mumbai and Gujarat. Shamankar will take care of the distribution of its CNG kits in these cities. According to Mr Ankush Arora, Vice-President marketing, GM India, "we opted for CNG primarily for its lower pricing and available factor in the targeted areas". GM India will offer warranty to the complete range of new Optras (1.6 and 1.8-litre variants) refitted with a CNG option. To avoid additional tax such as excise, the company has decided to opt for the additional fitment at the dealer level. According to industry sources, a diesel variant of the Optra is in the pipeline and is most likely to be introduced in 2007.
