Thiruvananthapuram , June 21 The southwest monsoon revived over the southern tip of peninsular India on Wednesday, after a 12-day lull. Conditions are favourable for its advance into parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, which were left high and dry by the onset pulse. Peninsular India will witness widespread rainfall over the next four to five days, said Mr J.V. Singh of the National Centre for Medium Term Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). This is despite the none-too-good forecast for upper level easterly winds, which are seen losing a tad in strength and even straying three days from now. But it is hoped that they will find their moorings sooner with the rest of the monsoon components pulling together. Both the upper level easterlies and the lower level westerlies have worked up reasonable speeds. The westerlies have clocked in excess of 20 knots per hour, but their progress north of the Thiruvananthapuram latitude is being blocked by a band of northwesterly winds.
An NCMRWF forecast said the advancing monsoon current is expected to enter East Madhya Pradesh, the remaining parts of Chhattisgarh, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh during the next five days. The upper air circulation over west-central Bay of Bengal was live but does not look like descending to set up a monsoon `low,' Mr Singh said.
The monsoon has so far been delayed by one week to 10 days over most parts of Central and Northwest India. The northern limit should normally have covered entire Maharshtra, Telangana, Rayalaseema, East Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, most parts of West Uttar Pradesh and some parts of East Rajasthan (up to Kota) by June 20.
