Builders sore over rising sand price

Our Bureau

The price of river sand, which was quoted around Rs 18/cft a fortnight ago, has gone up to Rs 40/cft now.

Coimbatore , June 21

The Builders' Association of India (BAI), Coimbatore centre, has sought a host of initiatives by the Tamil Nadu Government to rein in the sand price that has gone up by more than 100 per cent in about a fortnight.

It has called for a demonstration here on Wednesday to highlight the immediate need to save the construction industry at a time when the city has been witnessing a boom in building activity.

Shortage situation

In a statement, Mr G. Ramamooorthi, BAI Chairman, said the city was facing shortage of building materials at a time when there was rapid growth in construction activity - both industrial and residential.

The price of building materials such as steel and cement has also shot up.

He said the price of river sand, which was quoted around Rs 18/cft a fortnight ago, had gone up to Rs 40/cft now, making the building work unviable for the builders since the requirement for sand in construction activity was high.

There was also acute shortage in availability of sand in the market.

Plea to Govt

He requested the State Government to take steps such as allowing loading of sand at reaches at all time all through the week and to permit quarrying of sand in all available reaches between Karur and Tiruchi.

At places of loading, adequate machines in working condition should be deployed and underwater dredging equipments should be used to take sand from riverbed.

He also wanted the Government to allocate separate quarrying source for BAI on a priority basis.
