Labour problem cripples Ayurvedic eye hospital

It is alleged that all hospital-bound vehicles have been blocked for the past three days.

Kochi , Jun 21

Sreedhareeyam, probably the only Ayurvedic speciality eye hospital and research centre in the country, located on the outskirts of the rural town of Koothattukulam in Kottayam district, appears to be planning to move out of the State due to labour problems.

The hospital, which receives around 300 patients a year from different parts of the country and abroad, is the only hope for patients with diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration and other eye problems, Dr N.P.P. Namboothiri, head of the hospital, told Business Line.

He said the nagging and constant problems created to the blind patients or patients suffering from different eye problems by a group of 13 employees for the last 18 months were forcing the management to think of moving out.

HARASSMENT

The 13 striking employees and a group of "hooligans" have been blocking all hospital-bound vehicles for the past three days, it was charged. They allegedly destroyed two vehicles and disrupted medicine production and threw away certain precious raw materials, he said.

He alleged that the attack on the hospital had taken place at a time when there existed a Kerala High Court order to provide police protection to the hospital and its properties.

Patients come from all parts of the country as well as West Asia, Canada, the US and Europe. Aggrieved by the hooliganism, the merchants' association of the town observed a hartal on Wednesday.

OFFERS

The hospital management, which is already having treatment facility in the Raipur Ayurvedic Medical College with 20 beds, is understood have been offered 100 beds by the Chhattisgarh Government. Besides, an offer is said to have come from Madurai also.

For the State, which is promoting health tourism, the eye hospital is a major centre attracting large number of foreign patients.
