Petroleum Crude oil output up 1 pc in May Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 21 Crude oil production in May rose by 1 per cent after Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) recovered output from an area destroyed by fire in July. The exploration and production companies produced 2.86 million tonnes of crude oil in May compared with 2.83 mt produced during same period last year. India is Asia's third-biggest oil user after China and Japan. The natural gas output rose 1.4 per cent to 2.78 billion cubic meters in May, according to a Petroleum Ministry statement. Production from ONGC's Mumbai High fields rose 2 per cent to 1.51 million tonnes in May. Crude oil production by private explorers such as Cairn Energy Plc fell 0.8 per cent to 3,79,000 tonnes in May, the statement said.
Refinery capacity
The state refiners processed 12 per cent more crude oil in May as demand for diesel and gasoline rose. Refiners processed 11.58 mt of crude oil into fuels during the month compared with 10.35 mt during the same period last year. Output at Indian Oil Corporation refineries rose 10 per cent in May to 3.43 mt compared with a previous year as production at its plants at Koyali in Gujarat, and Mathura and Panipat, increased during the month, the statement said. Hindustan Petroleum Corp processed 1.39 mt of oil in May, 35 per cent more from the previous year, as output at its refinery in Mumbai nearly doubled to 6,56,000 tonnes, the statement said. Production at Reliance Industries Ltd fell 12 per cent in May to 2.63 mt, the statement said.
