Mega power projects

Given the current power deficit in India we need to have many more mega power projects to provide at least a single lamp connection to many of our village households, though the article "Ultra mega projects may not be a powerful idea" (Business Line, June 21) seems to argue otherwise.

While the distributed generation modules will survive in a grid backed by good base load generating capacity, the model will fail in our country, where we have severe shortages.

Mega projects bring with them the scale of operation and high level of automation and latest technology. If we have to achieve 4,000 MW of generating capacity even by three to four plants, we will add up a minimum of three times the labour force required to operate a 4,000 MW power plant. It is, therefore, in the interest of the nation that power professionals appreciate the need to bridge the gap quickly and work towards it.
